My Ipoh/ Cameron Highland Trip Part 2
Part 2 of the journey, after searching for the legendary Ang ku kueh mould it' is time to visit around Ipoh town and occasionally looking for food.
First stop, Tokong Nam Thean Tong which is very near to the famous fruit stall in Ipoh for selling Pamelo and other local food stuff. I am not very good at describing temples and I didn't took any pictures of the interior of the temple (Respect the Gods n Deities mah..)
This is Xian Ling Yan (if not mistaken), just right next to Nam Thean Tong.
They worship Guan Yin as the main Deity in that temple.

It's dinner time. How can you miss Ipoh's Bean sprout chicken for dinner? Forget about Lou Wong and Onn Kee (which is the local giant famous for this dish, very tourist flavoured). So in search of the best bean sprout chicken, we cruise around Ipoh and end up at this stall which to me known as Ipoh's best kept secret.
Sap Ng Low or translated as "Fifteen Tower" is the stall, known mostly to the locals only.
Ultra packed during the weekend.

And initially when someone told me bean sprout chicken I always have the idea of bean sprout cooked with chicken or vice versa whatever kind of derivative I can think of. Who knows it is bean sprout & chicken. One thing special is their bean sprout is short and fat.

After the introducing the wife, now the husband aka the chicken. The chicken is also specialy 'treated' in a way that after it was cooked they actually need to soak it in cold water and then hot water to ensure the tenderness of the chicken. Yummy!
Of cos best with the local Ipoh Hor Funn!
Now the comparison of Fifteen Tower and the other 2

The old man under the moon and his product (of cos la my parents!).
It is said that this is the chinese deity in charge of love and matchmaking.
His role is almost equivalent to western's Cupid.

Fifteen Tower:
- Cheap and nice. (at least RM 10~20 cheaper depend on how many ppl going)
- They don't have that commercial taste.
- You can opt for soupy Hor Funn or Dried (Kolo) ones.
- They don't serve meat ball and fishball.
- And they don't serve rice.
- Can't choose particular parts of the chicken you desired (ie I only eat chicken breast)
- Only open at night (correct me if I am wrong cos I only been there twice all in the evening)
- A bit out of the way if you are not familiar with Ipoh town
Onn Kee & Lou Wong:
- Been there for centuries. (I believe Fifteen Tower also old time player)
- Commercial taste.
- Serves fishball and also meatball.
- Here you can opt for rice, but I am not sure if they serve dry (kolo) hor fun.
- Yes you have to pay extra...especially Lou Wong.
- Open during daytime, used to be only Onn Kee, now due to competition, Lou wong started too!
- Both located in the central part of Ipoh, you simply can't miss it!

My Ipoh/ Cameron Highland Trip Part 1
I spent the whole Merdeka weekend over in Ipoh and Cameron Highland. It's not like I've never been to Ipoh, but well I find this time the experience unique since I'm traveling with my parents and also driving up all the way to Cameron Highland all by myself being a tour guide and also a driver.
We left Klang valley approximately 9:30 am, nice and leisure, free and easily reaching Ipoh town around 12. simply because we make a few stops for toilet breaks.
The next thing upon arrival is definately food, which is settled in Sun Tuck Kee, one of the famous place for fried hor fun. Check out the lunch menu!!
For the first time in my life I see the puppet lion being made for lion dance. It is almost consider a 'lost art' as not many chinese knows how to do it and also it's taboos and all.
After settling in the hotel, We began a quest in search of "The Lost mould of the Ang ku Kueh".
This lovely tasty local pastry is called "Ang Ku Kueh". Well this illustration is obviously not my mum's product. Her's is way more cute, way more chill-out, she doesn't add anything additive or coloring all is natural ingredient.
For orders you can contact me at kuanlin81@gmail.com, my mum's pastry is only available in Kuching!
My mum claimed that she's bought this mould somewhere in Ipoh town even I was here for the past few trips I can't seem to find it.
"Oh... The mould is like that one..."
See how many we got?

"Oh... The mould is like that one..."There's a difference in plastic mould and wooden mould. If you're making ang ku kueh for the fun of it or just once in a blue moon party with friends use the plastic ones will do fine. Unless you're like my mum who does it for selling you need a heavy duty ones.

My Meatless week so far....
I must say I am proud of my progress, it's been a week now since I started my 'meatless diet'. Things are going good, simply because of this my skin complexion got better and also I lose 1kg out of this simple act!!! On top of that bad breath also gone cos my body is less acidic!
Below are some suggestion of what you can have as a substitution of 'just meaty stuff' or rather what I had over the weekend. :)
Now this one is really special, Sushi salad roll.
Consist of mangkuang, cucumber, beetroot and also rolled in seaweed, all organic.
One thing also throughout my diet, I involved some organic vege in it.
Why? They are simply more nutritious! Usually we just need to pay a slightly extra more to get those extra nutrition, which I think it's all worth it. Also eating organic veg, you tend to chew more times than usual due to their texture are slightly different from other veg which is good for our facial muscles and also our teeth.
I must say I'm still not consider a vegan or anything, but this kind act brings a few benefits:
Stay Peace!

- Better Health (doh!)
- Better Emotional state at all times, less angry, less agitated (Try meatless a week and notice your temper!! Works for me!!!)
- Reduce global warming (less meat intake = less market demand = less poultry sacrifices = less land to rare these animals!!)
Stay Peace!

New place for a caffeine injection
Yesterday after my dinner I decided to drop by at the Starbucks at SS2 which is pretty near to my house. It's brand new and it's like the whole SS2 resident is begging for a Starbucks in SS2 (I know I did :p).
It's a 2 story shop style and really cozy feeling. Check out the pictures below!
My usual Caramel Frappucino Coffee Blended with whip cream venti size. I only manage to get the name correct last night after a few years of Starbucks (shameful :p). Cos usually I'll just go in and say,"Yeah I need a caffeine injection, get me that caramel something with the coffee based one, with whip cream on top and venti size."

Fav drink and the book I am currently reading Book of Secrets - Deepak Chopra. I only can read this book in places like this cos my place is simply too noisy!! Hard to calm my mind down and read. And it's Hard to read I admit it :p

My Meatless Week, Day 3
Guess what I got for today again? Bananas!!!
But Why bananas? Because it's good, simple, nutritious, economical and filling! Why not?
I got this in cold storage yesterday, cost me a hefty RM6.39. But so what? 2 bananas = 1 meal and there's like 6 of them with me ie RM6.39/6= less than 1 dollar per banana? So if you wanna like have a recession proof diet I seriously think having some bananas is a part of the solution (not all :p).
See how much value for money this can be?
And this is what I have for dinner! Hotplate seafood and rice, at station kopitiam in cineleisure. Again no meat!

As a sequel of day 1, I had the leftover bananas from yesterday which is ripen better today so it's tastier.
As for dinner I had Fillet o'fish Mcvalue meal. Hey i'm not violating the rules! Still it's no poultry product ie, no chicken, beef, pork and lamb/mutton! :p
It's Fish!!!

My Meatless week
Disclaimer: First of all I define the word 'Meatless' to be no poultry product ie, no chicken, beef, pork and lamb/mutton (no!!!). I still take fish and other seafood stuff. Ok?
As a announcement made in previous post, I decided to go on meatless for at least a week and beyond if possible. Part of the reason is because of the gruesome movie Midnight Meat Train, and partly because of health (hmm.. we'll see..)
Stay tuned for further episode.

Wendy's vs McD?
Friday after shopping for my shoes I decided to go for Wendy's for lunch (since i'm at the IOI mall). Everytime i go Wendy's I just can't help to benchmark it with our good old Mcdonald's.
I can't help it. And I come to a point to conclude that really Wendy's is more value for money (considering the amount being paid vs the food that you're getting)
As you can see the drink is LARGE size is really HUGE
(1 size bigger than the usual "LARGE" size),
so is the fries (and they serve the thick-cut type!!)
So I've concluded it like this
Wendy's Vs Mcdonald's
Pros:
Cons:
Conclusions
The food is served and the choice is yours! And Wendy's you owe me a cheque!

So I've concluded it like this
Wendy's Vs Mcdonald's
Pros:
- They are almost the same price you pay for Mc'ds. I ordered a large set of ultimate chicken grill and a 4 piece nugget cost me around RM 16 while in Mc'd I ordered a large set of Chicken Mcdeluxe and a 4 piece of nugget cost me around RM 15+
- They serve Thick cut fries unlike the traditional shoe strings
- For beef lovers they have quater-pounder, 1/2 pounder and the 3 quarter pounder to suit your appetite
- Their serving size are not 'for illustration purpose only', it's actual size. The value meals comes in small, regular and large. I must say their large serving's are HUGE!! And their regular is equivalent to Mc'd's large size.
- Like Burger King You are allowed to add extra cheese.
Cons:
- No drink refills (but it's ok if you're ordering large cos very likely you're can't finish the drinks after whole thing), wish they could improve that.
- Nuggets are not tasty and crunchy as Mc'donalds' and they don't provide any add-on sauce eg. bbq or sweet & sour sauce. Also small in size, big mouth like me can swallow 2 nuggets 1 shot!
- They don't have crushed black pepper flakes like Mc'donalds (cos usually i like to add some salt in pepper on it). They just merely have the usual pepper powder type, doh!
- They don't serve breakfast meal (or at least not yet?)
- They do not operate 24 hrs
- They do have as many branches as Mc'donalds do.
Conclusions
The food is served and the choice is yours! And Wendy's you owe me a cheque!
